Word doesn't want to open

D

Dominic

Every time I open Word it says:

16 bit Windows Subsystem

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose "close" to terminate the application.

I chosed "close". The message dissapeared then nothing
else happened.

I opened Word again. The message appeared. I
choosed "ingnore" nothing else happened.

How can this problem be fixed?

I'm not sure how old my version of Word is. But I had it
for about 8-9 years.

These are the instructions I need to fallow?

"4. If you get an error message as soon as Word opens,
but it doesn't crash (e.g. "Compile Error in Hidden
Module") ...

Moving any files that are in Word's Startup2 path to
another folder. Or

Renaming any files in Word's Startup2 path from
[filename].dot to [filename].old."

I don't understand the first 2 steps.

S

Suzanne S. Barnhill

Go to Tools | Options | File Locations and note the path given for Startup.
Navigate to that folder and either move the files out temporarily or rename
them.

Where do I click on "tools"? In "windows explorer"? It
doesn't say "options" in the drop down list. It
says "folder options".

In the link you gave me I don't see where it explains how
to open word with the \a switch.

I pressed ctrl while I try to open word and it doesn't
want to open and go in safe mode.

I also clicked "start" "run" and typed Winword.exe /safe
pressed "ok" then this message appears:

"windows cannot find "Winword.exe". Make sure you typed
the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a
file, click the start button, and then click search"

I also went in C:\Program Files\ and I can't find

Quoting from the beginning of section 2:

If Word crashes as soon as it opens ...
a) It is most likely to be due to template corruption. To verify
whether
this is the case, start Word without templates and add-ins loaded, to see
whether it still crashes: to do this, click the Start button in the bottom
left of your screen, select Run, and type winword.exe /a. (You may need to
specify the full path although you probably won't.)

Note the space before the forward slash! If you miss out that space,
you'll get an error message such as: "Cannot find the file 'winword.exe/a'
or one of its components".

The /a switch is intended as a troubleshooting tool only, and you
shouldn't continue to use it to start Word. Any customisations you make
while in this mode will be discarded.

Use Start | Search | Files or Folders to search for winword.exe. If you
don't find it, then Word is not installed, and that is your problem.

whether it still crashes: to do this, click the Start button in the bottom
left of your screen, select Run, and type
winword.exe /a.

Microsoft Office
