word doesn't work offline

I have windows XP installed on a Compaq laptop, coonected to a LAN and to proxy server for interne
Office 2000 Premium applications fail after short time when I plug off the network
e.g. Word closes after 1-2 edit commands or after typing a couple of characters
Other non-Microsoft applications, like Corel, happen to cause the same type of problem
The network printer, coonected to another computer, is HP CP1700 color inkjet. No other printers connected or installed

I've machines grind to a halt because some network-related operation
couldn't complete and wasn't handling the situation well, when the network
is disconnected or there is some problem with it.

If you are unaware of any such operation in progress, are you certain that
your machine is virus and trojan free?

Try installing the printer driver locally and pointing it to the network.
