Word Encoding Problem, all I see is ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ

My friends daughter is a High School writer and a friend of her's tried to
help her by cleaning up her PC, now she cannot open her book that she wrote.
Yes, she did not have a back up and now it seems that she has wrote a 68 page
book for nothing. She has spent months writing this and we cannot figure out
what happened. When you open the document, all you see is pages of this:
ÿÿÿÿð ÿÿÿÿð. Is there anything that we can do? Any
thoughts? I've checked it for a virus and it is clean. Any help would be a
blessing.

I guess nobody wants to break the bad It doesn't sound good.

If you want, you can mail me the doc, though there's probably nothing that can be rescued.

The file was saved to a CD while the PC was cleaned? Looks like something went wrong burning the CD.

Comparable disasters happened to most of us, before we learned to keep several backups...
