Word encounters program error on opening

When trying to open WORD (part of office 2000 premium)
i get an error box with "program error" in the banner.

in the box it tells me:

WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.


I have tried repairing MS office.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling.
Nothing changes.

I have run Norton AV 2004, nothing detected.
I have defraged, no change.

My OS is Windows 2000.

Is something in Windows corrupted? If so, why isn't the
problem resolved when Office is reinstalled?

Can anyone save me from the dreaded fdisk?
