Word error: "document name or path is not valid"

I keep recive the following error message:
"The document name or pat is not valid. Try these
suggestions. *Check the file permissions for the document
or drive. *Use the FIle Open dialog box to locate the
document."

I've tried all of these things and Word will not let me
open a number of my critical documents. I've heard there
is a "hotfix" but I have no idea how to get it. All of
the Word updates have been installed on my computer. I
use Word 2002. Can anyone help? Thanks a million.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode and then restore all permissions. To
restart in Safe Mode, press F8 until the prompt appears on your screen,
select "Safe Mode" and press enter.
