Word Error Message: "Microsoft word can't start the application required to open this object"

I have a user (using Office 2K with Win2K Pro) who receives the error
message "Microsoft Word can't start the application required to open
this
object. An Error has occurred and this feature is no longer
functioning
properly, would you like to repair the Feature now?" when opening an
Excel spreadsheet linked in a Word document.

Selecting Yes does not install the feature but shows the dialog box
""Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft
office
2000 sr-1 standard. The Windows installer cannot continue."

I have researched similar problems in Google Groups and I have
checked that:

- All Office features have been installed
- Excel - Tools>Options>General Ignore other applications is unchecked
- The latest service packs and online updates are installed
- Nothing in Microsoft's Knowledge Base seems to apply.

If anybody has any more ideas, all help is greatly appreceated..
