Word error message: The document name or path is invalid

M

Mark Y.

Like others, I am now getting the error message:

"The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive
* Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document
C:\...\My Documents\filename"

This just started last week. People to whom I was emailing a Word (2002) document couldn't open the file. When I go to email and try to open from an attachment it doesn't open and gives me the same error message. However, when I go to Word-->file-->Open it opens fine. The problem is that now I can't email anyone a document that will open on their end.

Apparently there's a patch or fix but I can't find it.

Hi Mark,

Did you also try the suggestions recommended to the others
encountering this issue?

I am getting exactly the same message, however I can't even save the document although something shows in Word when you open up the folder again. I can't save the docouments or re-open.

Do you have an answer to the problem?

I did try all the other suggestions that seemed to fit my situation.

First, I don't think my documents are password protected. I've checked and the only option available to me is to turn-on pw protection, not off (so I assume it's off).

I've tried a few older Word docs and found that they don't open either. (Was testing to be sure I didn't reconfigure something recently by accident that only affects new docs).

I've downloaded and installed the "EXTALERT.exe" file but it had no effect.

Any other ideas? Even a MS support area to email or call?

Any help is appreciated.

Oh, I also tried your earlier winword /r suggestion but I don't see a difference.

Did I need to reboot after doing that winword /r ?

It looks like the following MS Knowledgebase articles are related:
286890
286892
328100

However, none of these are helping me recover.

I've submitted a (paid) request for MS Support, since the 328100 article says I need a hot fix via MS in order to repair this problem.
