What version of Word and Excel are you using?
When does the hang occur exactly? Is it as you are opening the "Look
in" drop down?
Do you have any mapped drives that are unavailable? If so then the
applications aren't locking up - they are trying to connect to the
mapped drives and they will eventually time out and return control to
you. Remove the unavailable drives and see if that resolves the issue.
