Word, Excel, PP crash on start, Entourage OK - MS Office 2004 Mac

Word, Excel, PP, crash on start, Entourage is OK, Project Gallery will
open.
Mac OSX 10.3.9, G4 PowerPC, not on a netweok

I haven't used word, excel, PP, for a few months, they used to work
just fine. No updates to OSX since then. After the crashes I ran
auto update and it installed the latest Office update.
I did install a few new fonts, but immediately after the crash I
deleted them. I have trashed prefs, my Start Up folder is already
empty. I have run Font Doctor and deleted corrupt fonts AND have used
Font Doctor to disable all fonts -though 2 .dfonts will not disable??
- I have repaired permissions.

Hi Lis:

That's an ATSUI error, probably caused by corrupted font caches.

First, shut-down the computer, turn the power off, then re-boot it. That
may clear the issue.

Hi Lis:

That's an ATSUI error, probably caused by corrupted font caches.

First, shut-down the computer, turn the power off, then re-boot it. That
may clear the issue.

I have a sneaking suspicion it is something to do with fonts - another
user on this computer has a habit of downloading (from G_d knows
where) and carelessly dragging new fonts into whatever Font Folder
they find first. I think I have found (this forum) the list of fonts
not to delete - they have to be in the Office folder, not the
computer's Fonts folders, yes? Or do we also have to have a matching
set of the same fonts in one of the computer's Fonts folders?

I am a bit confused by the issue of updates - the last update
installed on this computer was 11.3.5 0 AutoUpdate says there are no
updates needed but one of the reference articles here said that Office
2004 should be updated to 11.4.0 - which advice do you advise I
follow?
Again, G4 PowerPC, Mac OSX 10.3.9, Office 2004.

I am not an Office tech expert by any means, though it seems I know a
lot more than the other users. They don't seem to keep the install
disks anywhere around,so I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Sorry Lizzey:

Things are getting a bit busy here, I took a while to get back.

I would put the Office fonts in the Office folder, then remove them from
everywhere else. If they are in the Office folder, Office will put the ones
it needs back into the system folder.

The latest update for Office 2004 is 11.4.0. If that has been applied, Word
will show itself as 11.3.8 and Entourage as 11.4.0.

Before beginning your repairs, ensure that Apple OS X is up at its latest
revision level. Always do the OS first, then the software :)

AutoUpdate can show only the "next" updates to be applied. The fact that it
says here are none probably means that 11.4.0 is already in. Check the
version of the Entourage application to be sure.

Also check the version of the Office Open XML Converter.app . That should
be at 0.2.1 (I ran the autoupdated today and it sucked in an update to
that). The update simply re-lifes the thing so the beta doesn't expire.

The full version of the converter would be waiting on the fixes to Office
2008, since effectively the converter is the file I/O engine from Office
2008. I guess the real version will be coming out shortly after the Office
2008 fixes, currently expected March 11th.

Thanks for your help, I can only imagine how busy you are.

I seem to have been nominated as the office IT person but I have
limited experience with the nuts & bolts side of Office.
I understand what you are telling me except for "Office Open XML
Converter.app" - nothing of that name is showing up in a search of the
hard drive - I don't recall ever seeing it. Sorry I'm so clueless -
they don't have the manuals for Office here.
- I see I can download Microsoft Office Open XML File Format Converter
for Mac 0.2.1 (Beta) from Office for Mac site - should I install it
after I finish installing the updates through 11.4?

- The fonts in Office Fonts should be ONLY in Office Folder, deleted
elsewhere- check.

- The system is up to date, permissions and volumes are OK - I check
after all updates.

MS Autoupdate is a problem - I just ran it & it says no updates are
available, but Entourage is 11.3.3. and it hasn't been updated for a
year;
Excel, PP, & Word are 11.3.5 - and these were all updated more
recently on the same date, and these are the ones that don't work.
- Should I download the 11.3.6, 7, 8, up to 11.4.0 updates and
install them manually? Will that do no harm, perhaps even help?

Well, you could, but I don't think you should bother. I think the
"released" version will be up on the website shortly after March 11. I
would wait for that one.
MS Autoupdate is a problem - I just ran it & it says no updates are
available, but Entourage is 11.3.3. and it hasn't been updated for a
year;
Excel, PP, & Word are 11.3.5 - and these were all updated more
recently on the same date, and these are the ones that don't work.
- Should I download the 11.3.6, 7, 8, up to 11.4.0 updates and
install them manually? Will that do no harm, perhaps even help?

I think what has happened is that you have had Entourage and the other
applications installed in two separate operations. For some reason, they
have got themselves updated to different versions.

The installer is failing because it thinks your applications are already
fully updated (some of them are...) but because at least one of the
applications is not "fully" updated, there are components that do not match.
That's probably what is causing the crashes.

In this case, I believe you need to do a Remove and Replace. Make sure you
can find the correct Licence Key for that machine: don't proceed until you
have it.

Then run the Office Remover tool. You will find it in the Additional Tools
folder of the Microsoft Office 2004 folder.

Remove the whole of Microsoft Office: All versions. Run the Remover TWICE
just to make sure that you've got it all.

The run Apple's Software Update, just to ensure that the Operating System is
fully up-to-date.

Now, re-boot and Repair Permissions.

Then re-install the entire Office 2004 from the CD.

That will get everything back to a consistent level: 11.0.0.

Repair Permissions again!

Now, download and run update 11.3.5. That should bring everything up to
11.3.5.

Then run AutoUpdate. All being well, it will then bring in everything above
11.3.5, up to 11.4.0.

If I doesn't, please report back and we'll have to get serious with it!
