The file pdfmaker.dot exists is your Office Startup folder {is my system the
folder path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 11\Startup} if you
have installed Adobe Acrobat {full version not just reader}. The Office
programs that have a Acrobat icon open this file when started.

You may need to reinstall Acrobat. I am not sure, but I think you need
Acrobat version 5.05 or later for Office 2003.

well,
I still cannot open any files.

all files still say the file "x.doc" is unavailable.

I have no virus scanner, or any virus stuff on my machine
adobe acrobat is completely uninstalled.

In excel i still get the initial error that the virus
scanner has detected an error in the file and cannot open
it.. and occasionally when i try to close word or outlook
or any office 2003 app. it prompts me to save normal.dot

This from Office MVP Beth Melton:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

.
Where can one find information about this when using
Norton CE?

Norton CE doesn't have the "Office Plug-in" option.

But several who use Norton CE upgraded or installed Norton CE over
Norton AV. In doing so the DLL for the plug-in could still be
registered.

Are you encountering a specific problem?
