Word fails to open

Running Word 6.0 in windows XP (yeah I know its ancient),
never had a problem with it until now. When trying to
open, it starts to initialize then nothing happens,
getting message that says - 16 bit windows subsystem.
C:\docume~\hoyt\locals~1\temp\. a temporary file needed
for initialization could not be created or could not be
written to. make sure that the directory exsists and disk
space is available.
I tried to reinstall word and it wouldn't reinstall. It
is also not listed in my uninstall (add/remove programs)
registry so I can't uninstall word. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Hoyt

Go to Documents and Setting, Username, Local Settings, Temp and make sure
that when all applications are closed, it is an empty folder. Also make sure
that it does exist and isn't restricted in any way. Word needs to be able to
open and delete in the folder.
