Word Fields and Merge Fields

I have a document where Word Fields are defined instead of Merge Fields. The Excel file Merge Fields are the same names as the Word Fields. Is there an automatic way to replace the Word Fields with the Merge Fields? Thanks in advance. Ted

Hi,
I have a document where Word Fields are defined instead of Merge
Fields.

what version of Word is used? What do you mean by "Word Fields"? I
don't understand the problem :-(

Thanks for the reply Lisa. I have Word 2000 on Windows 7. Here's an example of "Word Fields" in a doc file: Lease Date: <Tenant.LeaseSignDate> . The"Word Field" is enclosed in <...>. The "Word Field" has the same name as column headings in the Excel file. I have to highlight the "Word Field" and then select the same name from the "Merge Fields" drop down list. There are 20 to 30 "Word Fields" that I have to highlight and select from drop downlist. I get updated docs on a regular basis and becomes quite time consuming to manually assign "Merge Fields". I'm hoping there is an automated way to do the "Merge Field" assignments. Thanks.

Ted
