Word File Open command not working

W

Warren Wood

I have been using Word 2000 as part of Office 2000 for the
past few years, and in the last couple of weeks the FILE
OPEN command has failed, and instead I get the error
message that Word has found an error and must close. Word
itself opens OK without an error, and if I add text, I can
edit and save that text without a problem, but I cannot
open an existing file using the FILE OPEN command.

If I am not running Word and double click an existing
document file from Explorer, Word opens properly with that
file loaded correctly and it can be edited and saved
correctly.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2000, and all
the programs reload properly, except for Word, which
apparently does not uninstall itself.

I'm baffled and would appreciate some help.

Hi Warren,

We need a little more information. What version of Word are you using?
Precisely when does the error occur? Does the Open dialog box display
at all? Does the error still occur if you start Word using the /a
switch? Go to Start/Run and run:

Winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

Beth,

I am running Word 2000 with all updates. But I cannot open word unless I
open it using the run command winword /a. What can I do to correct this. It
opens when I'm in admin account but not under my additional user's account.

Thanks,

Hi Doug,

If you are able to use File/Open when using Word with the /a switch
then I'd say there is a macro intercepting your FileOpen command.
Here's what you need to do:

- Go to Tools/Macro/Macros and make sure "Macros in" reflects "All
active templates and documents".
- See if there are any macros named FileOpen
- Select the macro and see if the Edit or Delete command is available
- If it is then either Delete the macro or click "Edit" and place an
"X" in front of the macro name to prevent it from automatically
running until you can determine what the macro is actually doing

If delete is unavailable then chances are it is stored in a global
template. A global template is a template located in your Startup
folder that is automatically loaded when Word starts. You can find a
list of these under Tools/Templates and Add-Ins.

To determine which template, in the Macros dialog box, narrow down the
list of macros using "Macros in" at the bottom until you have
determined what template the macro is stored in.

Once you locate the template then either open the template and
delete/rename the macro or move the template out of the folder so it
will no longer be used.

Global templates are typically stored in your Word\Startup folder or
Office\Startup. Your Word\Startup folder can be determined by going to
Tools/Options/File Locations to verify this location. The
Office\Startup folder will be located in the installation path for
Office.
