Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel How can I reduce the size of inserted pictures in the document WITHOUT linking them? Seems like I used to be able to do this on my pc in Word2003... My 35 page document with pictures is now 140MB!

The best approach is to process the images properly using a graphics app
*before* plunking them into any sort of document... If you drop in a 1.8MB
image it will increase the document's file size by that amount.

More recent version of Win Word do have a Compress Picture tool which Mac
Word does not have. However, JPEG is a compressed format by its very design,
so how effective further compression might be on overly large image files is
questionable. It's even more questionable as to whether it's a good idea to
leave image compression to a text application in the first place... To
reduce the size they remove pixels, thereby causing deterioration of the
image, especially with regard to print quality.

If nothing else is available to you, use iPhoto to export copies of the
images in a smaller file size. Figure on dimensions of no more than 220-300
pixels per inch (ppi), so to print at 2"x4" the pixel dimensions would be
roughly 440-600 pixels wide by 880-1200 pixels tall.

The short answer is "Put less pixels in them" :)

You need a graphics editor. Word 2003 can automatically remove pixels to
shrink pictures. Word 2008 can't.

If you don't have a graphics editor, use iPhoto. You can suck those pix
into iPhoto then use File>Export to "Export" those pictures at a variety of
reduced resolutions suitable for things such as email or web use.

This is described in the iPhoto help.

Hope this helps

Thanks - I do have my photos in iPhoto, but I copied and pasted, didn't export them. Will give that a try first; otherwise will use the 2003 version on my pc to do this... Wonder why they removed the compress capability in Word 2008? That made it so easy!

GraphicConverter is a very good Graphics Editor almost as good as Photoshop. But much lower in Price. Its about $69.00. When you compare with PhotoShop Elements at $79 and Photoshop at about $600. Its a bargain GC is shareware by Thorson Lemke. He good at fixing any bugs fast and adding new features. My advice is if you do try GC. the first time download the version with the built in Manual you won't regret it. you can print the Manual out and put in a binder forence or leave on computer. And by the way. PNG Format Graphics work much better with office products than any other format and take up the least room
