Word files take too long to open

I have a problem with Office 2000 and MS Word 2000.
Whenever I open a file in Word it takes 30-40 seconds, no
matter how small the file. It appears that the PC looks
for a network connection when opening the file, or when
performing functions like Print Preview, Printing etc.

This laptop is used on a network during the week and on a
home network over weekends.

This problem started about a month ago, after many months
of no issue. I cannot find the switch or command that
will have Word look only at the hard drive.

The PC is a P4 with plenty of memory

Most important for running Word on a Laptop is to make sure that there is a
local printer installed. If the default printer is a networked printer, Word
won't be able to find it - thus the delay opening. Just install the printer
as a local printer (as well as a network printer) and the problem will go.
