Word Fomatting Characters in Mail Message

I'm using Office 2003, Outlook, and have Word as my
editor for eMail. The formatting characters (paragraph
mark, spaces, tabs, etc) have mysteriously shown up in my
messages (both the new ones that I generate and any I
receive). I do not have these enabled under Word and
can't figure out how to turn them back off in Outlook
options.
Anyone know the solution?
