I created a form in Microsoft Word. The data from access will include a
single category and multiple related rows for that category.

I really like the layout and formatting I created in word. Can I import the
word document into access?

Not directly, but you can use the Word form as a background for a report and
populate it with
Access fields so that it's impossible for the end user to tell the
difference.

Is that as effective as a merge with a subreport? which approach is easier
to achieve?

Tyhe subreport data may vary in length - so one may be a single page while
another includes multiple pages before the end of the report which includes
signature and date lines.
