Word formats more than selection

I have Word 2002 SP3, on XP Home SP2, with auto update enabled. Today for
the first time I found that when I try to format selected text in Word it
applies the new format to the entire document instead of only to the
selected part. I rebooted the computer but that didn't cure it. Is there
some Option that can cause this behavior, that I might accidentally have
turned on?

TIA.

Further diagnosis: I found that this problem only occurs in a New document.
If I create a new document based on an existing document, then I don't have
the problem. So somehow my "New" template got corrupted. Any ideas on how
this might have happened, and how I might correct it?

Thank again.

I discovered that my "Normal" style had the "Automatically Update" option
set. So whenever I modified the format of a selection that included a
paragraph mark, it would apply that same format to the entire document. So
now all I have to do is figure out how to change my Normal.dot template.

My problem started after I installed the latest Microsoft updates. Could it
be that one of the updates fooled with that option setting? Or is it more
likely that some malware did it? Or a gremlin fooling with my computer in
the middle of the night?

Hey Renny...doesn't look like anyone helped you with this issue...did you
ever figure it out? I'm having the same problem and it's very frustrating.

Until I figure it out, I have found that when that happens, if I do a CTRL Z
to undo...it'll maintain the changes to what I had highlighted, but it'll put
back all the other things it changed!

Please let me know if you've found out how to fix this...it's driving me nuts!

Thanks,
