Word freezes saving to shared folder

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I've checked the previous posts and I have not found one similar to this problem. I have two macs (recent MacBook and iMac) running Leopard and Word (MS Office for Mac 2004).

Frequently (but not always) Word freezes when a word file is saved to a shared folder on an external drive. This does not happen with other apps e.g. Excel. When it freezes the only option then is to force quit.

This happens to files that are opened from the shared folder, edited and then saved as; and also when new files are received as an email attachment and then saved as to the shared folder.

I do this operation frequently during the day and so is causing quite a few problems - is there a fix?

Many thanks for any help.

The only "fix" is to use Finder to copy the file to your local drive before
working on it, then close it and use Finder to copy it back again when you
have finished.

The issue is that the operating system in charge of the shared folder is not
correctly locking the file, or Word is not correctly seeing the lock. This
can be because both users have the same Unix ID.

Which means that when Word attempts to save the file, the other user has it
open, and Word gets terribly confused.

It is a bug.

Cheers
