Word freezes when saving *new* document!

Here's my problem: I have a user with MacOS X Tiger who is unable to
create new documents because Word freezes up when he wants to save the
document. He can open, modify, and save existing documents, but when
he creates a new document and attempts to save it, the beachball of
death starts to spin ... no dialogue box shows--just the spinning beach
ball.

Any hints for how to fix this?

Word: Version 11.2 (050714)
MacOS X: Version 10.4.3 on a Powerbook G4

Any chance of a virus in his Normal template? That would explain why
only new documents are affected... m.

Consistent and reproducible problems in Word usually respond to one of the
standard troubleshooting measures, which you will find listed here:

(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Work through them one by one until something helps. The one thing not listed
there is creating a new user account in OS X and seeing if you get the same
problem, so try that too. The most common culprit is a corrupted Normal
template or damaged Preferences file.
