word graphics

Suddenly - when i insert pictures into my word documents they behave
erratically. Usually, the picture dores not display. if i click on the place
where it should be i get the outline, if i adjust the outline size, then i
get the picture. But it will soon disapper.

I have looked at all the postings, all the suggestions - they do not work.

I have been using word for over a decade. my current version is word 2002
and i have been using that without problems for a long time. Recently i did a
major upgrade (which i waited on for a long time), including upgrade to xp sp
2. Since then, I have this picture problem.

Are you sure you don't have "Picture placeholders" checked on the View tab
of Tools | Options?

yes - very very sure. this problem started up after my xp upgarde to service
pack 2. The pictures that i use include very simple pictures of hearts,
spades etc (card suits). I have replaced these with character symbols to get
by for now.

The pictures show up fine when in an html document viewed with the browser.
Only when i copy over to a word document do they started disappearing.

I found another thread where people have same problem.'why do pictures not
show in word". Someone there also thinks it is an sp2 problem.

If you're copying the document from the Web, then the pictures are merely
linked rather than embedded. Word must have access to the online source in
order to display them.

no no no!!!! - this is inline and copies over quite fine. The little
pictures are there but come and go. I only mentioned to illustrate that we
are talking about low res pictures. I have oodles of documents where the
pictures are 'there' but often do not show on screen.

I have a problem that did not exist until i did my upgardes from microsoft.

Well, "inline" is not the same thing as embedded, but, that aside, if you
search this NG you'll find suggestions of other solutions that involve
reducing hardware acceleration or getting an updated video driver,
especially for certain ATI graphics adapters that have a flaw in this
regard.

i have zero interest in changing my driver. you are going in th wrong
direction. just read what others have said. if the pictures show on the
screen in other applications, then the problem lies elsewhere. i wish i could
rolback the sp2 update

This is actually not true, as Word drives the driver harder than most apps.
And if you don't have the latest driver, why would you not want to update?

I don't know if you have tried it but I always convert my pictures
immediately by selecting text wrapping and 'place behind text' so that they
are (for my work) much easier to move about the screen. I also use XP 2002
and have SP2 with no problems that I can recall. Hope this helps

I have the same exact problem, I have been an MS Office user for over a
decade too and I just came here looking for info. Several posts from 2005
and before gave me the answer. To fix: go to Control Panel --> Display -->
Settings --> Advanced --> Troubleshoot and lower your hardware acceleration.
Results may vary. Any acceleration less than Full may cause this. This was
a feature added by MS to reduce the paging time when going through documents
with lots of graphics. Hope it helps

Sorry...correction...an acceleration level of FULL may cause this problem so
setting your acceleration level below full may fix it. I too am on XP SP2
and noticed this problem after going to XP SP2.
