Word hanging - network configuration

Starting on 7/8/04 I started encountering errors on
several machines in our office. Word is hanging as if
waiting for a file lock or other resource. It is
happening on several clients running Windows XP/Home.
These same clients had been working successfully for
months prior to July 8th. The problem does not seem to
match the "opening" problems, or the printer problems.

I have not yet been able to discern a pattern to when Word
hangs. Sometimes the client has had a file open on our
server. Sometimes they have been files that are on the
user's desktop (on their local C: drive). It has happened
shortly after opening and it has happened after working on
a file for 20 minutes. One of the client machines has
been in use for 2 years. One of the client machines is
brand new, with everything freshly installed.

Checking the log files on the clients and the server I can
find nothing unusual at a time that would corrrespond to
the Word failure (such as a bad block or network
failure).

My suspicion is that one of the updates my server picked
up on July 6th is causing a problem. But reviewing those
updates nothing seems relevant. My server installed the
following updates on July 6th:

KB837001, KB828741, KB835732, KB828035, KB823182

The server had not been updated prior to July 6th since
April 4th.

Configuration information:

Server: Windows Server 2003.

Clients: Windows XP/Home with either Office 2002 or
Office 2003 installed.

The "My Documents" folder for logged on users is on the
server (not their local C: drive). Word's other file
locations (templates, revovery, etc) are all at their
default location (on the local C: drive).
