Word hangs on quit

I am having a problem getting Word to quit. After quitting, any Word
documents and the Formatting palette disappear (as they should), but
sometimes the menu bar stays in place, and even when the menu bar
disappears, Word's icon stays active in the dock. A Force Quit has been
the only way to effectively quit Word.

Any suggestions?
