WORD hangs; required update fails repeatedly; no reason given; ?

After reinstallation due to hard drive crash, Both WORD and EXCEL hang-up
when trying to save files. Allowed error message sent to Microsoft; that
took me to website where I'm told I need update. When attempting download,
I'm taken to trouble-shooting screen, but no error message is given to
explain why the download failed. Anybody? Anybody?
