I've been banging my head against this problem for a few days now and I seem
to have found a solution other than using Paste Special and choosing
unformatted text. The problem only seems to occur when copying text from a
web page using Internet Explorer.
I downloaded and installed the Firefox browser and copied text from a web
page opened with it. When I hit paste in Word the text showed up fine
without the formatting. Just to be sure I did copy the same bit of text from
the same web page opened with IE and hung Word when trying to paste.
