Word "hangup"

Q

Quietus101

Please read the following e-mail and replies to get
discription of the problem.

I've purchased the Microsoft Office 2003 from the CGA
office and had no initial problem opening links to
assignments word documents on the FN1 Course. But after
opening Lesson 3 word assignment, Word is "hanging".
When I "end task", I get the message notifying me that
the program is not responding. The error reported and
sent is:

C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER120.tmp.dir00
\iexplore.exe.mdmp

C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER120.tmp.dir00
\appcompat.txt

Along with:

szAppName: IEXPLORE.EXE szAppVer: 6.0.2800.1106
szModName: hungapp szModVer: 0.0.0.0. offset 00000000

Whenever I attempt open the assignment documents through
the Word Application, I have no problem opening all
lesson word assignment documents except for lesson 3 and
5. The message that appear upon opening the 2 above
assignment documents is:

The document 'asgn3.doc(asgn5.doc)' caused a serious
error the last time it was opened.

Please follow-up on what the cause may be and how I can
rectify this annoying problem!! I would to be able to
open the word assignments documents how they're suppose
to be opened i.e. through the FN1 CD Application!!

Hi Jonathan,

It is obvious a problem specifically with the word
documents associated with the course CD. The only
difference between these documents and regular ones that
you create on your own is that they use templates. That
is the only thing that would cause the assignment
document to load so slowly compared to other documents
you have. Try again to shed the template. I would
suggest firing up Word Pad. Then go File, Open and
navigate to, say, the same path: My Computer > C:\ >
CGA03-04 > FA3 > Assign > ASGN7. Word Pad doesn't
support template formatting so it will open the document
and automatically shed the template. Re-save the
document and close Word Pad. Then fire up MS Word and
try to open ASGN7 again. It should open up like a
regular document because the template should be gone.

Let me know how this works out. It's got me baffled! I
know for sure that it's the document template though
that's causing it to load so slowly because you're not
getting errors and it's not causing Word to hang or shut
down.

Hello Nena,

Again, I've done what you've instructed me to do upon
opening Word, going to File, Open, and selecting My
Computer > C:\ > CGA03-04 > FA3 > Assign > ASGN7. It
still takes over 5 minutes to open the file. I've also
tried opening an existing word document saved in My
Documents and found that all files opened there takes a
split second. It seems that any Word documents that I
open through FA3 or MA1 for that matter, I seem to be
encountering long delays before displaying the file under
Word. What is going on? I'm still thinking that it
may have something to do with Word Settings- on how
certain files are opened or imported/downloaded to Word.
Your follow-up is greatly appreciated.

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Shedding the template should have fixed the problem.
Opening and resaving the document in WordPad is
essentially the same thing as adjusting it in the add-ins
section of the MS Word application.

Could you please try to open the document from Word?
Fire up your Word application, then go File, Open, and
browse to My Computer > C:\ > CGA03-04 > FA3 > Assign >
ASGN7. See how long it takes and let me know. In fact,
try opening any Word document from Word and let me know
how long it takes.

Hello Nena,

Thank for your reply. However, under Tools, Templates
and Add-Ins, the default is Normal of which I've
cleared. I've followed your instructions but still find
the document taking more than 5 minutes to load. For
example, upon opening assignment 7, a blank Word window
opens up and on the bottom, there is a description of
what is occurring- "downloading from the site: file
C:\CGA03-04\FA3\Assign\ASGN7.doc". This screen remains
sitting on desktop for over 5 minutes before the needed
document is fully displayed. I am running Windows XP,
Internet Explorer 6.0, and Microsoft Office XP. My
computer was just purchased one month ago.

I don't recall ever having encountered this situation in
the past and would like this remedied. I am thinking
that it may be that certain Word settings need to be set
properly upon opening existing document files. Please
assist me with a proper solution to allow me to open such
documents how it is meant to be opened.

Thank you again,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Please make sure you are using an operating system of
Windows 2000 or higher and that your browser is updated
to Internet Explorer version 6.0 or higher.

In regards to the Word documents, it may be trying to use
a template that cannot be found. There may be an error
message appearing but it might be covered by the 'hung'
Word window. Minimize it to see if there is an error
message. Close the error and Word will load the
document. Choose Tools, Templates and Addins then clear
the Template setting. Save the document. It should load
properly.

Another fix is to open the assignment in WordPad. Start
WordPad from the Start menu, accessories then open the
file from the harddrive. Then simply save it back and
WordPad sheds the template because it's not a supported
feature.
