Word has 100% CPU usage under XP

I have a frequently occuring problem. I run XP Home with Word 2000. I
frequently get Word using all the CPU time. If I close the Word document,
the Taskbar icon dissappears, but Task Manager shows winword.exe still
running, and using all spare CPU time. Ending the process returns things to
normal.

Does anyone know what causes this? and is there a fix for it?

Hi Howard,
You're right, I need to exit Word. However the application icon on the
Taskbar won't respond. The CPU remains fully utilised at 100% and will only
reduce if I close the process using Task Manager. Do you have any idea what
is causing this?
Thanks.

One possibility is that the instance of Word is being started by a macro
and is not allowing user control.
