"Word has created errors and must close" error

When starting Word 2000 I received this error, "Word has
created errors and must close". I upgraded to Office XP
after removing Office 2000 and now Word will only start in
safe mode. Logging in as administrator I traced the
problem to a COM add in, changed the setting and Word
works. The problem is that logging in as the user
the "Customize" line in the tools menu is greyed out and
not accessable. Without access I can't change the COM
setting and Word still only comes up in safe mode. Any
ideas?

You could just delete the registry key associated with
these addins
(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0
\Word\Addins I believe; possibly \Office\Word\Addins).
Just delete any subkeys relating to that particular COM
addin and you that will remove the addin. If the user
profile doesn't have access to regedit, you could try
running a program that will delete the regkey bypassing
regedit (assuming you can access a command-line). If you
need such a program, I've written one that will do just
that. Shoot me an email at [email protected] and I'll
email it to you.

HTH!
