"Word has stopped working" error

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and have been using Word 2007 with no
trouble for about six weeks. Today, after a Microsoft automatic update (June
11), Word will no longer work. The program opens and it opens docs but the
vertical scroll button will not move, I can't manually move the cursor point
or select text. When I try to close the document or the program, I get the
error message "Word has stopped working." It then looks for a solution but
finds none. I have tried restarting and completely stopping and then starting
but nothing will work. Any help gratefully accepted as I am an historian
working on a book and must access Word!

An update was installed while Word was still running corrupting the
registry. Run Regedit, navigate to the Word Data Key and with DATA selected,
press Delete. Word will automatically create a new Data key when it is next
started.

Word Data Key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

This is the easiest computer fix I've ever had! Thanks so much for a quick
response to my problem.
