When I save a document there is a second file saved on my computer.
For example...if I were to save a document named bicycle, there would
be a second docoumet beside that one named ~$bicycle. Why is this
happening and how can I prevent it from happening in the future?

That document is a temporary working file that's necessary for Word to
run. It's meant to go away when you close your document, or at least
when you exit Word.
