Uninstalling/reinstalling seldom solves problems with Word, because setup
"conserves" existing user settings. There is a utility for cleaning up so
that that the uninstall is really complete. Or, an easier approach is to try
the steps shown here, which I find almost always work in fixing Word startup
issues:
