word imposed formatting

i am using word 2003 in an XP operating system.
When I selecta paragraph (text plus a single carrige return) or a single
cell in a table, and change formatting, word respondes by applying that
formatting to the whole document.

This does not occur if I select part of a paragraph or cell, ro if I select
more than one paragraph or cell.

I have turned off many autocorrect options
Any thoughts?
