word inserts thousands of pages

i have a word documenat runing in xp professional, that
when i try to alter wrapping or edit just about any part
of the document inserts literally thousands of pages, i
left for a few minutes once and got to approx. 12000!!!
any ideas on how to stop this before i have to re-do
course work appreciated.

This 'infinite repagination' problem is usually due to a corrupt table. If
you have Office 2003, try the File, Open, select the document and then
select the Open & Repair option from the Open drop-down options.
