Word intermittently pauses over and over while typing

I am running office XP and when I use Word or my Outlook
email editor, it continues to pause as I am typing, and
while doing so, a menu appears in the upper left hand
corner of the workspace. The buttons on the menu that
flashes for just a blip look like the buttons that are on
the browse object menu from the vertical scroll bar on
the right side.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thank you.

Do you have Voice Recognition enabled?

How would I find out if Voice Recognition is or is not
enabled? I don't think I do, I have gone as far as
uninstalling office and reinstalling it. This does not
fix the error either, so I wonder if there may be some
sort of a corrupt reg key.

Nope. It'll be Voice Recognition. Uninstalling and reinstalling rarely fixes
any Office app.

I have attempted to learn more about this voice
recognition thing, but as I try to go into the speech
feature, it wants me to go through a set up for a
microphone, which I don't have. Speech is not checked, so
I don't think my voice recognition is on - am I missing
something? The problem still occurs no matter what I try.

There a a couple of people in our office that have the
same problem. Word is constantly pausing, creating an
unworkable environment.

Run Office Setup from Add/Remove programs, choose Change and uninstall
handwriting and speech inputs under the Alternative Inputs option list by
deselecting them and clicking on OK.

I did uninstall those features and I am still having the
same problem. It's tough for me to explain as the browse
object menu appears in the left hand corner as well when
it is pausing. I know for a fact that the menu doesn't
belong there, nor would any menu - it is actually showing
up within the workspace.

For test purposes, please start Word from the Start, Run dialog by typing in

winword /a

and pressing enter. Please do some normal editing whilst Word is in the mode
and see if the problem is still present.

Terry,

I tried that and the problem still exists. This is one of
the most frustrating problems I have ever encountered.

I'm snookered by this problem. I wish I was able to sit in front of this
computer and give it a good thrashing but unfortunately, I can't be much
more help. At this stage I'd probably look at the Add/Remove Programs list
and uninstall everything that I know I don't need and can reinstall later.
I'd also suggest running a Spyware/Scumware utility such as SpyBot to make
sure it isn't something that's come in from the Internet.

After that, backup all your files and then do a fresh install from a disk
reformat.

Terry,

Thank you for all the help and patience. I will try the
spybot software and see what I come up with.
