Word is changing the Modified Date of a file

I'm looking through old documents, opening them up with MS Word 2002.
I make no changes to the document, but the Modified Date of the file
keeps changing to today's date, how do I get it to leave the date as
it was?

Yes, I know there are many hoops I can jump through to get around
this, however I just want Word to behave properly... Excel,
Powerpoint don't do this.
