word is currently not recognising pictures, any suggestions?

we currently are unable to edit pictures in word as it doesn't seem to
recognise them. we can insert but can't change size etc It's starting to
get really annoying!

Which version of Word? Does this happen just with certain documents, or all
documents?

Word 2003. It has started doing it in about the last month and with all
document. You have no view of the picture and are unable to edit it, but
when you go into print preview the picture can be seen (but of course still
not edit facility)
