Word is opening very slow and keep getting "Word is not responding

I am having problems with my Word 2003 SP1 opening extremely slow. I mean I
can try to open a document and then go get a cup of coffee take a R&R break
and it still has not opened.

I am running Windows XP and this computer is only about 14 months old.

What can I do to help Word run faster and better?
