Word is slow when saving to the network

We are having a problem that is being experienced by about 4 people here.

Everytime they try to save a file onto the network, there is a very long
delay, but if you wait long enough, eventually it will allow you to work
again.

I've read through some of these posts, and there are no disconnected network
drives.

The systems are XP running Office 2003. The server is NT 4.0. Workstations
were all working fine until recently.
