Word is taking 3-5 minutes to autosave documents

I'm working in a Word document that grows daily; I am a writer. Word is set
to autosave every ten minutes. It takes 3-5 minutes to autosave which is
annoying,because I can't write when it's saving. What is causing these long
delays and how do I fix it?

Versions of Word and OS?
Are the OS and Word patched up to date?
How big is big?

Maybe is it partially corrupt. Open it as a COPY and then use SaveAs and
choose .xml format. Close it, reopen it and SaveAs a .doc(x) format again.
Does that change the size of the document? Does it speed up AutoSaves?

Personally, I find AutoSave is really a pile of poo and stopped using it
many version ago. It doesn't do what most people think it does and pressing
Ctrl+S at convenient moments is a simple habit to adopt and that really does
save your work.
