Word just quits unexpectedly

The entire app just dissappears without warning. When I reope Word and open a document, open the revcovered document, then start to type something, the cursor dissappears and I get the standard "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error message.
Details reveal the following:
AppName: winword.exe
AppVer: 10.0.5815.0
ModName:unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 00000018

I have every Windows XP and Office XP update loaded. Any thoughts?

Word has encountered an error

Same thing is happening to me...I have been unable to repair or reinstall
