Word keeps crashing - HELP

Hi,

I'm being driven crazy by Word, which for no apparent reason, just freezes
mid sentence! I can open and save documents OK, but when it crashes there
is no error message, a complete lock out, mouse disappears, no keyboard
response, no ability to do alt-ctrl-del etc. Furthermore, on rebooting,
there is no message about recovery from a serious error etc.

If it's of any relevance, I notice a flicker on each character I type. I am
running NAV but, as suggested in another post, I have disabled it for
Office.

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition, with MS Office XP.

Please help with any ideas on what could be going on here.

Sometimes, odd Word behavior is caused by corrupted normal.dot or registry
