First, you might want to familiarize yourself with the Mac Operating System
so you'll be aware of features such as Force Quit. It enables you to do what
its name suggests without having to power off your Mac whenever any program
hangs as you described.
The most common causes of such a problem with Word are:
1- Office updates have not been applied,
2- OS X updates have not been applied,
3- Disk Permissions are in need of repair,
4- interference from other apps/utilities,
5- Font issues
If the problem continues after you confirm that those points have been
addressed please reply with as much specific information as you can about
the nature & file type of the document, whether it's one in particular or
any document, etc. The more accurate detail the better.
