word locks up my computer

any suggestions? this began a few days ago. I use
symantic for virus protection. calling up a Word document
makes me do a total shutdown: I have to power down the
machine.

Calling up the Word program in the Start Programs menu
I can do a "crtl-Alt-Delete".

Thanks. I fixed it by changiing two Normal.dot files to Normal.old

How would I find the FAQs you sent me to if I did not know the URL?
