Word locks up when changing fonts

My wife's Windows XP machine has recently begun to act up.

When she highlights a block of text in Word or Excel and
clicks on the dropdown box to change the font the
application locks up.

It does not lock up windows. We can shut Word or Excel
down and do other things, but Word and Excel just hangs.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

A corrupt printer driver would cause this. Check first that you have the
latest driver for your printer then delete and reinstall the printer again.

Hi Russ,

I've also seen that happen with damaged fonts (or badly written freeware
fonts).
If it happens with a certain font only, try to remove and reinstall it, or
search for a similar-looking font.
