word:mac 2004. Use of underline - bold -italics changes entire document

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

Word:mac 2004.

For a week now, when I highlight a line and apply Underline, Italics or Bold, my entire document has all formatting removed, and the desired format (underline-italic-bold) applied to the entire document. When I 'undo' once, it removes the entire-document change, applying my initially desired formatting only to the line I had originally highlighted.

I rebooted my entire Office:mac 2004, but that has not fixed the problem. I don't use Excel much, but have not noticed it there. I do not use power point.

I have the most recent weekly (10.5.1?) update for Office downloaded, but this has not improved things.

Thoughts?

Dear [whoever],

You have instructed Word to automatically update this particular style when
you make manual changes.

You can fix it by clicking in a paragraph with this style then choosing
Format menu => Style => Modify => de-select "Automatically update".
