word minimizes on startup

W

William Hendry

For some crazy reason MS Word, as part of OfficeXP, has
decided to minimize itself when I start it. It's running,
just in the toolbar where it does no good. When I click on
the minimized icon it opens and then minimizes itself
immediately. What causes this? Is there a registry change
that needs to be made or something simple?

Thanks for any help

Most likely it's not really minimized. Right-click on the Taskbar button and
see what options you have. If they include Minimize and Maximize but not
Restore, then Word is opening in a Normal window offscreen. To get it back,
open any other window, right-click on an empty area of the Taskbar, and
choose Cascade. This should bring the Word window back in view. Use the
mouse to move and size it to your preference, then quit Word. When you
restart Word, it should be where you left it.

Hi William,

It sounds like the window is opening off the Desktop rather than
opening minimized.

Here are a few things to try to get it back:

- Open another window, right-click an empty area of the Taskbar and
select "Cascade"

If that doesn't work then:

- Right-click the Word task and click "Restore" if necessary
- Right-click again and select "Move"
- Use one of the arrow keys on the keyboard to "lock in" the move
command
- Use your mouse and see if you can move it back to the Desktop

If the above doesn't work then follow the steps in this article for
recreating the Word\Data key in the Registry. Note that all you need
to do is rename/delete the Toolbars value of the key instead of
recreating the entire key:
