Word Networking Issue

Hi All,

We seem to be having a really strange problem. When I open a word doc with
Word XP or 2003, it just kind of hangs, with the hour glass. If I give it
15 minutes or so, it'll open! But, if I unplug the network connection, the
document will open up immediately. There aren't any obvious embedded things
which should require a network connection, so I'm at a loss as to why it's
behaving this way.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Nick White

It most likely is attached to a template that has been
moved or deleted. When you are connected to the network, Word will spend a
lot of time futilely looking for the template. When you're not connected,
the unsuccessful search doesn't take as long. With the connection unplugged,
open the file and attach a different template, preferably a local one, such
as Normal.dot. As long as you don't check "Automatically update document
styles," this should have no effect on document formatting.

ok, I figured it out. Word saves the template path in the document. So, in
this particular document, it had a template path pointing to a network
server that hasn't been operational in over a year. To fix it, I went to
Tools >> Templates and Add-ins, and changed the document template to
"Normal". This fixed everything. Hope this helps someone in the future.
