Word "normal.dot" error messages - automation issue

I have a VB6 database application that uses automation to create multiple
Word 2003 reports based on user demand. Report creation works just fine.
After creating a report, the report ".doc" is saved to a pre-defined user
folder and then reopened and displayed in Word print-preview mode. This
works fine also.

The problem that I am experiencing is that when the user tries to close the
print-preview window and then Word itself, they have to go through a series
of Word error messages dealing with the "normal.dot" template. I haven't a
clue why. Any advice would be appreciated. I can't figure out why Word
just doesn't close. If any code detail is required to better understand the
problem, please let me know. Thanks Joe

The code is likely causing changes in the Normal template and Word is giving
the user the opportunity to save the changes.

I've also seen this happen when a misbehaving 3rd party add-in interacts
with my apps.
Sometimes one has to do tumblesaults to workaround the problems, e.g., see
