Word Normal.dot file corrupted

D

DS101

I have been having problems with my word documents getting
saved but an error message will always come up and ask if
I want to replace my Normal template?...yes or no.

I have also received a message that my system is
Dangerously Low in Resources when I try to access word. I
can not open word any longer.

I have gone to the Microsoft Support Knowledge Base and
gathered the following information, but it has not
helped. I can open Word now, but I am still getting Error
Messages. Could someone please help???

Microsoft Support
When you use Microsoft Word or another program that uses
Word as the default editor, Microsoft Word may stop
responding (hang), or you may receive one of the following
error messages:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will
be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium
Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in WINWORD.EXE at
address.
NOTE: The actual memory address may vary. Followed by the
following error message:

System is dangerously low on resources.
This behavior may occur under any of the following
circumstances:
You open Word.

Word appears to stop responding (hangs), and you press
CTRL+ALT+DELETE to quit Winword.exe through the Task
Manager.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the default Word template
(Normal.dot) is damaged.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, rename your global template
(Normal.dot). To do this, follow the steps for your
version of Microsoft Windows.

On the File menu, click Close to close the Search program.
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Microsoft
Windows 2000:
Quit all instances of Word. If you use Word as your e-mail
editor, be sure to quit Microsoft Outlook also.
Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or
Folders.
In the Search for Files or Folder Named box, type
Normal.dot.
In the Look in box, select your local hard disk (or an
alternate user template location if you are running Word
from a network server).
Click Search Now to search for the file.
For each occurrence of Normal.dot that appears in the
Search Results window, right-click the file, and then
click Rename on the menu that appears. Type a new name for
the file, such as OldNormal.dot or Normal-1.dot, and then
press ENTER.
Close the Search Results window. Restart Word normally
(without using the /a switch).

If Word starts correctly, you have resolved the problem.
In this case, the problem is a damaged Normal.dot
template. You may need to change a few settings to restore
your favorite options.

.

The /a switch is the way to go. Unfortunately, this
article only gives you part of the truth. You probably
have an addin that is appending information to
Normal.dot. Here's what I suggest doing:

Use this article as a reference as needed:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;322743&Product=wd2002

BEFORE starting Word, complete all of these steps:
1. Turn on your Show All Files feature (folder options)
2. See if there is anything in the following folders
(remove any items present):
C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup
3. Search for all files named ~$ in the Windows
Find/Search feature. Delete any files found.
4. Rename your Normal.dot
5. Open Word with the /a switch
a. go to Tools->Templates and Addins
i. remove any addin listed here
b. go to Tools->Customize
i. click on the Commands tab
ii. select Tools on the left side
iii. drag COM Addins on the right up onto your
toolbar (anywhere)
iv. close the Customize Dialog
v. click on the new COM Addins button and remove
anything listed
vi. Hold down the Alt key and drag the COM Addins
button off the toolbar onto the blank document (just to
get rid of it)
6. Close Word
7. Open Word normally (hopefully, Word is fresh and clean
again!)

HTH!
