Word not responding

I am running Office 2000 on Win XP Home. WHenever I try
to save a work document in another directory than the word
default saving dir, the save dialog box hangs with the
message not responding. After about one minute I am able
to change to directory I want.

I tried to reinstall/repair word, but that did not help.

Any thoughts?
